Lermontov Opera

We went to the opera on a Sunday night. Tako, a woman we had met in Lincoln arranged for s to have tickets. Her boyfriend was one of the leads in the play. The opera was written by Pushkin but was based on the novel that I read as a recommended work by an historian of the Caucus region, Lermontov's A Hero of our Times. This is a nineteenth century Russian novel replete with wild emotion, romantic love, and extravagant declarations. Here are few pictures. The cast. Two musicians.

I can think of no better place for me to see an opera than in Georgia. Opera and classical music is very much a dominant part of cultural life here. One often sees people carrying violins strapped on in cases on their backs in place of the ubiquitous American and European backpacks. The opera was wonderful.
